Man says he drove SUV into his Gaithersburg townhouse

GAITHERSBURG, Md. (WUSA9) -- The holiday cheer came to a screeching halt at a townhouse in Gaithersburg Thursday night after one of the men who lives there says he accidentally drove through his own front door.

Floyd Gatewood was back at his home Christmas morning to pick up the pieces left behind after he says he accidentally backed into his townhouse.

"I was backing up, foot slipped off the brake, hit down on the gas. Took off back there, ran up here," Gatewood said.

At the time, Gatewood says he and his daughter had loaded up that SUV with gifts to deliver to family members. But when his foot slipped, they went over the curb and into the home.

Investigators say no one was inside at the time. but the structural damage suffered led an inspector to deem the townhouse "unsafe to occupy".

So, with one false move. Gatewood is now without a home for the holidays.

It'll be ok. Glad nobody was hurt," Gatewood said.

Some neighbors have chalked it up as a Christmas miracle that no one was injured. The Red Cross has put Gatewood up in a hotel for the time being.
