GAITHERSBURG, Md. (WUSA9) -- A mother who was crossing the street with her adult daughter Monday morning was fatally struck in Gaithersburg, Montgomery County police said.

The woman was hit on southbound Route 355 at S. Westland Drive around 5:55 a.m., according to authorities.

The two women were in the area of the crosswalk heading to the bus stop across the street. The mother, Muluemebat Gelaw, 50, of Gaithersburg was pronounced dead at the scene. Her daughter was not hit, according to police.

The car involved in the accident stayed at the scene, police said. The driver has been identified as Rodolfo S. Guillen, 42, of Gaithersburg. He was not injured.

Family members told WUSA9 that Gelaw was an Ethiopian immigrant who came to the U.S. five years ago to join her adult daughters, both of whom are U.S. residents. She was disabled from a back injury and used a crane.

According to a friend who spoke with Gelaw's daughter, Gelaw had fallen behind while crossing the street and was nearly at the curb when she was hit.

The accident is currently under investigation. Police are trying to determine what the traffic signal was showing at the time of the crash. The pedestrian cross signal gives people 25 seconds to cross seven lanes of traffic, and only seven seconds while the signal indicates walk.

Detectives are asking anyone with information regarding this collision to call the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620. Callers may remain anonymous.
