Police ID boy killed in Gaithersburg car crash

GAITHERSBURG, Md. (WUSA9) -- Police have identified the five-year-old boy who was killed in a car crash in Gaithersburg early Tuesday morning.

Daniel Dana was killed in the crash that happened around 3:30 a.m. near Fields Road and Rt. 370 or Sam Eig Highway, police said.

Montgomery County Police say Dana's mother, Narges Shafeirad, age 33, was driving an older Toyota Corolla when she lost control of her vehicle, hopped a median and crashed in an opposing lane.

Sometime during this incident, the vehicle caught fire. An EMS happened to be passing by at the time and immediately tried to help, but by the time first responders forced their way in, it was too late.

Shafeirad suffered burns among other injures and remains in serious condition at a nearby trauma center. Police said Tuesday afternoon, there is a chance she may not survive her injuries.

"To wake up and hear that on the news was very startling and you know, you feel for the family," said Adrienne Duncan.

Duncan lives just behind Sam Eig Highway and told WUSA9 she was up with her infant around the same time of the accident.

"This tends to be a spot where a lot of accidents do occur. We hear them kind of all the time. There was nothing out of the ordinary from the usual sirens about this morning," Duncan said.

"Definitely one of the questions that we're trying to figure out is where the woman was coming from and the circumstances of why she had the young boy out at 3:30 in the morning," said Lt. Dave McBain.

Andrea Lyons heard about the crash.

"I'm a teacher in the area and anytime something happens to a child or obviously anybody, it's a grave concern of mine, for the community especially," Lyons said.

Lyons and others also expressed concern over speeding and newer traffic patterns in the area.

"The center's opened up, there's a lot of great things with the center but the way the traffic patterns have been set up with the county I guess being in charge, with lane switching and lanes that used to be there for years, no longer there, it's kind of confusing for people that drive on this road all the time," Bruce Charchman told WUSA9.

"It's very puzzling, you know, the situation. It's very sad overall. I mean anytime anyone passes away, at such a young age, it's very sad a devastating," said Delmar Henry, who saw the aftermath Tuesday morning.

Montgomery County Homicide, The Fire Marshal and Collision Reconstruction Unit are all investigating. Police and Fire Marshals are asking witnesses or anyone with information related to this event to call 301.279.8000.
