Man Fires AK-47 Into Air, Charged With Reckless Endangerment

GAITHERSBURG, Md. (WUSA) - Montgomery County Police say a Gaithersburg man is charged with discharging a firearm in an urban area and reckless endangerment after admitting to firing an AK-47 into the air in his backyard. 

Thirty-eight-year-old Kenneth Wayne Barney Jr. is being held on $20,000 bond. He is scheduled for a bond review Monday afternoon in Rockville.

No one was hurt in the incident. According to police, a search of Barney's home on Washington Grove Lane turned up four weapons, including the AK-47, a 12 gauge shot gun and two handguns. Police say one handgun was loaded.

Police Release Photos Of Suspect Wanted In Md. Armed Robbery

MONTGOMERY VILLAGE, Md. (WUSA) - Montgomery County Police released the above photos and are asking for the public's help in identifying this armed robbery suspect.

On Nov. 5 at about 6:34 p.m. police responded to the Liberty Gas Station at 19205 Watkins Mill Road in Montgomery Village for a commercial armed robbery. Police say the suspect entered the business, displayed a gun, and demanded money from the register while holding a gun to the clerk's back. The suspect also took the clerk's wallet.

Police describe the suspect as a black male with a mustache, about 5'9" to 5'11" tall, weighing about 230 to 260 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black, nylon North Face jacket with a hood, black/nylon pants and black boots.

Riderwood Retirement Community Receives American Flag that Flew in Afghanistan During a Veterans Day

Riderwood retirement community received an American flag that flew in Afghanistan during a Veterans Day ceremony that honored hundreds of military veterans on Monday.

United States Marine Sgt. Carlos Batenga presented the American flag to Riderwood’s Executive Director Chip Warner, who is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and who served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy. The American flag will be prominently displayed at Riderwood’s 120-acre campus in Silver Spring, MD, as a tribute to all veterans.

The flag was flown over the headquarters of 8th Engineer Support Battalion (Forward), Camp Leatherneck in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom on July 4, 2012. It is dedicated by the United States Marine Corps to Riderwood in honor of residents who served in the military.

Woman Dies After Montgomery Co. Pedestrian Crash

GAITHERSBURG, Md. (WUSA) -- A 37-year-old woman has lost her life after a serious crash Monday night in Gaithersburg.

Montgomery County Police say Yessenia M. Martinez Rivas of Gaithersburg was struck by a Toyota Prius that was traveling northbound on Muddy Branch Road at approximately 5:30 p.m. She was in the roadway near Suffield Drive, according to the police.

Martinez Rivas was taken to Shady Grove Hospital, and then flown to Medstar after the accident. At approximately 11:15 p.m. Monday, she succumbed to her injuries. 

No charges have been filed against the driver, 66-year-old Daniel Levine of North Potomac. Levine remained at the scene and provided information to investigators, said police.

Police continue to investigate the collision and are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to call the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620. Callers may remain anonymous.
